Platform Bed Frame
This bed frame was designed to be both minimal and aesthetically pleasing, featuring clean lines and symmetries. To help achieve these design goals, the use of both a headboard and footboard were omitted. Hickory was used for the majority of the frame and poplar was used for the center of the mattress platform to keep the weight and cost down while maintaining durability. The use of lap-joints between the two legs and two cross-beams allowed for the elimination of any hardware for a cleaner look. In addition to this, the weight of the platform caused sufficient friction that it wouldn’t move when placed on the legs and beams, so no fasteners were needed. As the end of the platform is cantilevered, a free body diagram was used to ensure that the bed wouldn’t tip when someone sat on the end of it. Some drawings and pictures of the bed are shown below.
